Media 2008-2009

i have found the media course for AS level, 2008-2009, to be very interesting. i have deeply enjoyed working along side the media department, with all of their support, and general knowledge i have been able to learn so mucch from them. Being part of the media family, even if only as a student, has really taught me alot, with the bright, enthusiastic and caring personalities from the teachers they have been able to assist in a variety of learning.
After the course this year, the media industry seems alot more complicated then one would have thought, however i now understand all of its complexities, and am now more than confident to analyse any media text that is put infront of me.
i think the layout of the course is very well thought out with each unit being explained well, and each unit linking to the next in a way which contributed to the memorizing of the content.
The only thing i would change about this course is the learning materials provided, my personal opinion is that the booklets provided with the information needed to pass the course where a little bit to lengthy and at parts borderlined 'woffleing' about information that wasn't neccessary. this had the adverse affect as to the linking of the units.
Although i believe this part of the course could be improved on it is a very minor improvment as i found the course overall a very enjoyable and peasureably learning experience.

hello

social realism

Genre can be defined using the repertoire of elements. For example; visual codes. Visual codes include iconography, cinematography and mise-en-scene. These things are used in 'A taste of honey' in the moving, to create the stereotypes, as mentioned later on. Also narrative codes would be used; stock; situations, characters, plots. In 'a taste of honey' the plot is set out as the girl being pregnant and the homosexual male bringing the baby up. Sound codes can be used to define the genre of the film e.g. music dialogue, sound FX, digetic and non-digetic sound. The genre can also be defined by the audience by the directors and key stares in the film, as directors leave their own personal signatures on their films and actors may be pigeon holed as certain stereo-typical characters. The final Repertoire is Themes and Ideology; declined of industry masc. in crisis politics ECT.
During the 1960's social realism was used to show the parts of society, which were not accepted as the 'social norm'. For example in A Taste Of Honey the mother and daughter had to move about a lot due to lack of funds to pay rent. This wouldn’t be accepted socially due to the traditions of leading a long honest life. Also the Daughter got herself pregnant while underage, this is a big social no. To top the film off, in the 1960's it was socially unacceptable to be homosexual, and during the film a homosexual young male helps the daughter through the pregnancy and the up bringing of the child. The film shows this using the repertoire of elements. For example the visual codes, with the iconography using suitcases when moving etc. and the mise-en-scene for the homosexual male, this assists the film buy creating a stereotypical image of a homosexual male, e.g. earrings short hair etc.

narrative in this is England.

Using propp's theory we can establish how the characters are used and what message the director is trying to potray using their status. We start by establishing who the 'Hero' is, in This Is England, Woddy appear to be the hero at the begining of the film where he takes Shaun into the gang, therefore giving him friends and allies which is what he appeard to be lacking. However this is the only part of the film there appears to be a hero, therefore making Woody now look like a 'faulse hero', this is du to his lack of back-bone when it comes to stcking up for Milky. The next character to be established would be the Villan, this is occupied by Combo, Comb puts across this 'easier life' the 'way forward' in jis eays and for a short while the gang begin to believe him. However his 'ideal' life turns out to be a corrupt racist world which the rest of the gang later figure out this and leave his side.
